When it comes to creating content, one of the critical decisions that marketers face is whether to go for a long-form or a short-form content approach. Shorter content pieces are easy to consume and tend to take less time to create, while long-form content allows for in-depth discussions and provides value to the reader. So, which approach is better? The answer depends on your target audience, marketing goals, and content strategy.

To help you with your content strategy, we’ve listed out the pros and cons of each content approach (this is part of our usual content brainstorming process that we do with our clients at the beginning of every content project here at Market Crafters). Hopefully this guide will help you decide which one is right for your business!

What is Long-Form Content?

Long-form content typically consists of more than 1,000 words and provides readers with in-depth knowledge, statistics, and analysis on a particular topic. The aim is to provide comprehensive coverage, with information that’s not present in other sources. Long-form content tends to do better in search engine rankings as they capture inbound links and backlinks with a higher interest in the content.

Advantages of Long-Form Content:

Long-form content helps a brand establish authority and credibility. The ability to go in-depth on a topic, positions your brand as an expert, making it more memorable to your audience. It also boosts the likelihood of your content being shared across social media channels and generates quality leads that are more likely to convert.

Disadvantages of Long-Form Content:

The disadvantage of long-form content is that it requires a significant amount of time and energy to create. You must have a deep understanding of the topic and the patience to translate it and express it coherently. Long-form content is not ideal if you aim to push out content quickly.

What is Short-Form Content?

Short-form content is brief, delivering information quickly and concisely to the reader. Short-form content typically spans 300 – 600 words and tackles only the essential details. Short-form content also fares well in search engine rankings, but they go into less depth than long-form content.

Advantages of Short-Form Content:

One of the significant advantages of short-form content is that it’s quite easy to create. Brands can quickly publish posts at a steady rate, ensuring their website always has been updated and keeps visitors engaged. It’s also ideal for time-specific content such as season greetings since it doesn’t require extensive research.

Disadvantages of Short-Form Content:

Short-form content can lack the in-depth information and analysis that long-form content provide. This can lead readers to seek information from other sources, reducing your brand’s credibility. Short-form content also has limited space and may not rank as high as long-form content.

Which Approach Should You Use?

When it comes to choosing between long-form and short-form content, it’s essential to consider your target audience, business goals, and your brand’s specific content strategy. Brands that need to establish themselves as industry experts or generate leads that need in-depth information should focus on producing high-quality long-form pieces. On the other hand, brands that need to communicate regular updates or deliver time-sensitive content should prioritize short-form posts.

Both long-form and short-form content have their own benefits and drawbacks, and what works best for you will depend on your target audience, marketing goals, and content strategy. Short-form content is ideal for social media promotion and creating buzz, while long-form content is better suited for lead generation and establishing thought leadership.

In the end, it’s essential to strike a balance and provide the best mix of content that resonates with your audience. By creating the right mix, you’ll be able to reach and engage your audience effectively and achieve your marketing objectives.
